Witchfire was originally going to be published by a small indie manga company; unfortunately, they went bankrupt during the economic downturn. Under that contract, the entire book was finished in an anime/manga style. When the deal expired without the book ever going to print, I revisited the project and decided to re-draw it with full-color page art. Here are some samples of the promotional art included in the original pitch package.

These are some of the original character designs from the first manga draft of the book.

Witchfire is based on the true story of Elspeth Reoch, as detailed in her confessions to the court that tried her for witchcraft in 1616. You can read more about Elspeth in Diane Purkiss’ book, “Troublesome Things: A History of Fairies and Fairy Stories”

Or, for any burgeoning historians out there, you can find the actual trial records here.
